Petition to Restore Meal Service

UPDATE- Your voice has been heard, and United has repealed the decision to sell meals on transatlantic flights. They have not yet changed their other wrong-headed policies, including domestic business class flights being served only Buy on Board items without being charged . Our petition will remain to discourage future bad ideas, which will doubtless occur as soon as the Tilton management group believes this one has been forgotten.

United Pilots to Tilton: Stop Nickel and Diming Our Passengers Petition

Pilots for United Airlines strongly oppose the airline's plans to drastically change its onboard meal service by raising prices for food and drink on most flights and by discontinuing complimentary meal service on many flights to and from Europe, affecting both economy and business class passengers.

The airline claims that rising fuel costs require these changes, although the real reason may be to enable the airline to further reduce flight attendant staffing, which would make onboard service noticeably worse. By any measure, the pilots believe, the proposed changes are a disastrous business strategy that would only drive away customers and encourage them to choose other airlines.

"Rather than taking the fundamental steps necessary to put our airline back on course, such as rationalizing the flight schedule or eliminating excessive perks and bonuses for executives, United's leadership is penalizing the one constituency that is critical to our airline's success: its loyal passengers," said Captain Steve Wallach, Chairman of the United Chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association. "Instead of nickel-and-diming our passengers, United Airlines management should be demonstrating that despite today's challenges, our passengers still come first."

Captain Wallach said the proposed changes are just the latest of bad decisions made by United CEO Glenn Tilton

"Glenn Tilton and his executives can be counted upon to select the path that inflicts the most misery on our passengers," he said. "We condemn this latest price scheme and we call for its immediate rollback."

Please help us stand up for passengers by signing the petition below:

"United Airlines Pilots and Passengers stand together to condemn the wrong headed elimination of meal services from long distance flights, in-flight staff reductions, price increases for Buy On Board Meals, and reduction in domestic business class meal services. We join with United Passengers in demanding restoration of these services immediately."

The history of requirements for quality systems, or at least some elements of quality systems, goes back to pre-historic times. Almost 4,000 years ago, in the 18th century B.C., Hammurabi, the king of Babylonia, developed the first recorded code of law. The Hammurabi?s Code is a collection of laws and edicts, ...

I am sorry that you should feel the need to alienate our passengers with implimenting further charges for meal services. Charge an extra $5 or $10 but do not make the atmosphere on the plane even more hostile than it already has become after 9/11. Continental prides itself with hot meal service even in coach and is still charging $5 per alcohol beverage. Their flight attendants even make more than the UAL flight attendants so it can not be because of our labor costs and they are paying for fuel also. Make us competitive and proud to say we work for United Airlines rather than being a Scrooge and making enemies out of the world. Remember even you Glenn Tilton and Pete McDonald will have to answer to a higher power in the end, we all do. Thank you for your effort to "save" our airline but do so with integrity and honor.

No way! If United can not provide service to compete with the other major airlines, please do everyone a favor and just LIQUIDATE yourselves already! This is simply burning the deck chairs - cut it out. If BA and UA both advertize a $800 fare IAD-LHR, why on earth would anyone choose UA - it's bad enough UA now steals $7 for a drink - yes, that's stealing - your competitors do not do this. Now you think we're dumb enough to pay the same price only to get mugged to buy a sandwich on an 8 hour flight. You will trick people once - but not twice. If BA advertizes $800, you will have to undercut them substantially to make up for your service deficiency. Good luck to you, but this is a really stupid idea. How much money did you spend advertising during the Olympics? How many sandwiches would that have bought?

I'm a 1K, weekly flier, non-basement fare-payer, and I have had enough. I have weathered the aging fleet and the associated mechanical delays that plague my travel, the demoralized cabin crews, the elimination of 500 mile minimums EQM on short (EXPENSIVE) routes, and I have stuck with United through gradually deteriorating service. But the changes to meal service are the final straw for me because they indicate the worst level of cost reduction without any possible hope of positive impact to the UAUA bottom line while guaranteeing negative passenger impact, because of the ridiculous spin that the changes are based on any kind of meaningful research, and because it underlines United's attitude towards it's frequent fliers and premium cabin passengers and tells us that we're really not very important. I fear the other "revenue generating" measures that are to come, and wonder how successful United will be at generating revenue as some of the most profitable passengers look for other airline partners.

Most of my flying is through ORD. I am on my way to AA and hoping that they are more willing to look after me than United has been. I hardly think that they can be worse.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBelle D.

TERRIBLE mistake. Has Tilton or the Board of Directors EVER been on the European competition to see what is being offered? It isn't the meal being gone that upsets me. It's the relentless nickle and diming. This is just the final straw. Bring back my United.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBrian Cowan

I agree with this petition.

It is a shameful path (and an even more shamful attitude towards the passengers) the UA management is walking down.

What a terrible move! That being said -- I'm not surprised. Based on my experience with the underhanded crooks that call themselves 'management' I'll bet that this is just the opening move for them to cut Flight Attendant staffing to the FAA mins. What's that? Five for a full 767 LHR flight? I guess they've already shown their true colors to the employees, now it's time to fleece the passengers.

mr tilton, you are a poor excuse for a manager. Just do us all a favor and LEAVE.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterC Rose

pls disloyal me from the meals. I know. It's only 7$, but I'm cheap. I will walk from IAD to europe to save $7 (4 Eur).

As a United 1P flyer, I am seriously looking at my alternatives for airlines. This is just one more nail in United's coffin.

Any successful business strives to provide it's customers a quality product or service at a reasonable price. United,as well as other airlines, appear to have gone out of their way to upset their customers. Any company that treats the customer as UAL has, deserves to go out of business.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterScott M

To the executives of United Airlines:

I am signing this petition because I strongly believe that you are moving United in the wrong direction.

I have observed United's actions over the past several months (such as charging for checked bags) and now, charging for meals. With all due respect, this it outrageous!

Your company is a founding member of the Star Alliance, a network of premier and premium carriers. By nickel-and-diming us, the customers, you are reducing the incentives to fly United and are sending us to your competition, which currently provides better service.

Think of fellow Star Alliance partner Singapore Airlines. They don't charge for bags and they don't charge for meals. All classes have personal television screens with AVOD. They provide amazing service and there is always an incentive to fly them.

I believe that United has the same potential--to be a world-class airline, like Singapore Airlines. United used to be one of the world's most prestigious carriers and it can be so again.....but only if radical changes are made---for the better, and not for the worse.

First, you need to treat your employees well. They are the ones who interact with us everyday and we want to see smiling and happy employees, who can provide for their families.

Second, you need to offer an internationally competitive in-flight product, across the board, in all classes, on all flights. Bring back perks, such as complimentary alcoholic drinks and hot meals on every flight. Add new perks, such as PTVs with AVOD to all seats, on every flight. Be innovative and creative; don't be destructive.

Third, stop trying to be a low-cost carrier! From what I've seen, it seems that you want to cheapen the product. United isn't a low-cost carrier, it never was a low-cost carrier and it will never be a low-cost carrier. Stop trying to be Ryanair; we don't want a Ryanair, we want a world-class United Airlines!

I believe and I know that United has the potential to be so much more. Executives of United, I implore you not to throw this airline away. Don't let it fall apart. Make radical changes for the better! Thousands of people depend on our business, the customers, for their paychecks. If you want to keep customers, you need to "Wow!" them every time they step onboard your aircraft.

Reverse the destructive nickel-and-diming charade and put United back on the path to greatness. United should be striving to be #1 in terms of service, in all classes, on all flights. It can be done, but the initiative must be taken.

Respectfully,

iloveboeing

i am a premier executive residing in phoenix, i could have been easily been a usairways elite, but i opted united, and going to dubai a lot i always fly united and pay full fare business. i am really not happy with the situation for charging in coach for meals on international, nor switching to BOB on domestic biz on 3 class aircraft. thats why i always used the upgrade kits to be able to upgrade, but with that, i think i am changing my mind...

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterhamad alhaj

I will fly about 110,000 miles on UA this year, putting me into 1K for the first time. I will now avoid any European flight out of IAD and will happily say "BYE-BYE" to UA, once they expand the BOB non-service to any other gateway and my 2009 SWUs are used up.

While I still had hope for UA before, a business strategy like the current one can only lead to Chapter 7. Time to burn my miles.

BOB =/= meal service, and the reasons stated for said change are ludicrous. Even the LCCs going to europe have full meal service.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJ. Drake

Glenn, please leave United and don't let the door hit you on your way out! You just lost a lot of customers with this idea. Why not just put a vending machine in the galleys in all cabins? At least with that, it's still cheaper.
Why would I want to pay $9 for fresh menu item and $6 for a snack box when I can get a better meal in the terminal?
Charging for meals in business class is just low class. I guess that goes with Glenn, since you have no class.

You should leave United for cheating on your wife. For getting your secretary pregnant! For not caring for what United can be but for how much money you can make and how many passengers you can piss off.

Go now and save United!!!

Sincerely,

Jet Le Premier Executive (switching to Southwest)

I am very disappointed. Hey, Tilton are you on crack? I have about 95K miles pilled up so far and as soon as it reaches 100K (which it will very soon), I will use it up and after that adios baby. You are out of your mind and I promise you that your kingdom will come to an end soon.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSG

To Whom It May Concern:

I think that this change in meal policies is truly awful. I am a premier flyer with United, and to date have earned over 35,000 elite qualifying miles with United, with more currently booked. Let me just say how I now regret booking United internationally. Oh how luxurious Lufthansa looks now! Granted, I recognize that United shares revenue with Lufthansa, but I still would fly with them now over United. I am connecting through IAD, and won't even be served a meal on my overseas flight? I certainly expect such nickel, diming, and general dis-regard for its passengers from US Airways or RyanAir, but hadn't, until now, from United. From now on when booking international, I will surely book elsewhere, as I am sure this is a sign of things to come under this administration. Glenn's Gotta Go! He has ruined what I was once proud to call my airline. Now I'm embarased to admit I'm flying it. It makes me feel used, and not appreciated.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterUAPremierGuy

as a 3 year 1K, perhaps its time to go back to CO...unfortunatately with this current bunch of morons (management) in charge UA will not be arround much longer. better to go back to 2.25 times miles and at least know they will be good in a year.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterspin

I agree with this petition! If meal service is not restored, this Premier Executive is taking his business elsewhere!!

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterNaveen

These changes are completely and utterly ridiculous. Enough with your race to the bottom United. You used to be an amazing airline. When I was a child I dreamed of flying UA regularly to places across the globe, and chose an education/career path to get me there.

The current senior management, headed by Tilton and a bunch of other idiots, has run United into the ground. For the first time, I believe these changes, if actually implemented, will force United into bankruptcy. Chapter 7 this time though.

I, for one, will take my business elsewhere if these changes are implemented. Only a moron makes a decision which alienates the customers they need the most- frequent fliers and high-fare paying premium cabin fliers.

Tilton, resign. If you don't, hope the board gives you the boot. And don't even consider letting these changes go through, or the airline I once loved will cease to exist.

I know that this only affect 12 flights across the Atlantic but this is a relay bad idea....I don’t ever want this to get off the ground.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterWe Are United

With this change, I will exclusively fly European carriers on international flights. On a 7+ hour journey, UA must serve free meals even in coach. And no free meals in Business Class is absolutely RIDICULOUS. Much better to raise the fares by a few dollars.

JR: 1K from BOS, million miler.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJ.R.

Well, one more nickel and more more dime from your loyal customers. Can you just raise your airfares to a reasonable level and stop this madness? I'm sure that people will realise that today you can fly to Europe or LA for less than or about the same price - APEX fare - that you could 29 years ago when I started traveling. Air travel is not "public" or government subsidised travel, you are a public corporate entity that must charge a fair price for your service. This nickel and diming of everyone will do you no good in the long run. Give me Lufthansa or BA anyday..at least I know when I buy a Business class seat, it will be comfortable, usually on time, a decent meal, and a relatively "happy" staff. Something I haven't seen at UAL in at least 7-10 years!! Do us all a favor re-think your corporate "strategy". It's a losing one.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJack Gaffney

I was a loyal, 10+ year customer on UA on their transpacific route. I like UA. But seeing all the services going downhill, now I switched to CX (Cathay Pacific) or other Asian Carriers on my trips because 1) they offer cheaper tickets, 2) they offer PTV in every class, even with their "old" aircraft 2) they offer me food and 4) they give me more flights

I would say UA should expect riots if they decide to cut food on transpacific flight, and seeing more customers like me switching to other carriers like SQ, EK, CX, NH, OZ, or even Air China.

Tilton, please leave UA ASAP. A high school kid can run UA better than you.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPo

I'm astonished. In Australia you can get a full hot dinner in Economy on a flight less than one hour yet over in the USA most airlines charge and now United is pulling the plug on it on TATL. If this continues throughout I will not fly United on a 15 hour flight over the pacific with nothing for the same price nearly.

This marks a sad end to a once great airline.

As someone who has been either Premier or Executive or 1K continuously for over 10 years, I have collected a fairly large point balance. I'm now going to spend them down and join another Star program. Having lost my points from other collapses (Ansett, Swissair) I'm not about to have that happen again.

C'mon United. What is the deal? Charge for bags. Now wanting to charge for food on international flights. Are you trying to go out of business?

I really don't understand what WHQ is thinking. Raise ticket prices by $10 to cover the cost of the meal. All of these "add ons" are becoming ridiculous. I just earned 1P this year, so I'm sure UA doesn't care about me given that I'm not a top source of revenue. On the other hand, I do travel on mostly H+ fares. And I fly PAID BUSINESS internationally. Yea, they might be Z fares, but its still not "bargain basement" economy fares. Now you're telling me I have to sit in business on 3-class domestic flights (which I prefer to F on 2-cabin planes), and I'll be provided a BOB snack box for free?!? What a bargain *rolls eyes*

Get real. Glenn Tilton needs to go! Along with a lot of other people at WHQ. United is starting to make Virgin America and JetBlue look like the angels of the US transportation market. Pathetic!

If these changes aren't rolled back, my $ (about $18K so far in 2008 - and potentially another $10K by the end of the year) will be going to another carrier.

I am a disgruntled US Airways Gold level traveler who has just moved my business to UA in the hopes of something better. Please, don't come down to their level. Suggestion: Prepare a flight manifest for the FA's so they can see by seat number who is Mileage Plus Premier and higher, and don't charge them for drinks etc., just say "Your drink was pre-paid in your ticket, Mr Smith" so pax nearby don't get weirded out. My point is, don't treat your most loyal pax like your least loyal who just chose the lowest fare on the Internet.

I can only hope that upper management will seriously listen to our passengers. They absolutely refuse to listen to their front line employees, they have picked our pockets clean and now they just continue to abuse our passengers. Maybe upper mangagement should spend a week on the front line and really open their eyes and ears to both employees and passengers. Their refusal to listen will be the end of United. STOP and LISTEN for once please.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterUAL employee 21+ years

I chose United for my first international trip in January. It took 10 hours to fly from Rome, to Dulles as well as from San Francisco to Frankfurt. Meal service on a flight of that length is ESSENTIAL for health and safety of the passengers. Charging for food on those flights would lead to a mutiny of the passengers. This decision has lead me to fly exclusively European carriers, which charge about the same if not a tad less when I need to go to Europe.
Right now, the U.S. airline business is the laughing stock of the world. Please restore these modicum of standards. With the amount of fuel aircraft need to carry for a flight of that length, the cost of catering a flight that length is negligible at best and cutting it makes United look like a bumbling buffoon.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRafael Pozos

I am a frequent international traveller. I've been using United for the past ten years. With security measures at airports making travel miserable, the only consolation is hoping for a pleasant flight. If UA starts treating passengers like airport security does, I won't hesitate to pay a little more to be treated well by another airline.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered Commenteriravin

Eliminating meal service is a bunch of bunk. You will chase away passengers and dry up your revenue stream. Think twice Glenn Tilton before making such a rash decision!!

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterVernon

Another foolish decision, wait until a Full Fare C passenger from AMS-LAX that is touted as 1 flight number but has a stopover at IAD and all of a sudden gets BOB for their next flight.

Cut all of the executive pay and save the airline a few million dollars that way. I'm flying another carrier TATL. I already took away 50K in flying this year and next year I'll take another 25K from that.

1K 700,000 miles lifetime since 03.

congratulations!! you have just been awarded moron of the year award for your worst idea yet. You did however manage to hire another VP, Mr Don Dillman formerly of AA. It is common knowledge that you will not give up any of your own salary Mr Tilton, but you do not bat an eyelid at sticking it to your employees, and passengers. Friendly Skies? NOT SO MUCH!!!
